Introduction to Illustrated Songs
Illustrated songs were a popular source of entertainment in the 20th century in the United States.
Thousands of small theaters across the country would feature illustrated songs which would include both live performers and recorded music. Illustrated songs were used as a valuable tool to promote sales of sheet music. The audience was often encouraged to participate which also helped with marketing.
One popular illustrated song from 1894 was "The Little Lost Child” this song sold more than two million copies of its sheet music. The success was mainly credited to the illustrated song performances which could be considered as the first "music videos.”
In the last decade, the visualizing art form of making music videos has grown to be one of the most influential ways of promoting music in the industry. From the first note to the last, music videos help us connect with the song and the artist in a whole new way. Music videos can be called a work of art or can end up being considered a complete disaster.
This blog is going to discuss music videos and how the performance in the video is related or unrelated to the lyrics of the music. I will cover several genres of music chosen by popularity based on a survey I conducted in my advanced information technologies class. (see below)
Please feel free to suggest specific music videos you would like me to review.
